The field of General Surgery deals with a wide range of surgical problems utilizing the latest non-invasive and minimally invasive techniques. For problems that cannot be treated with these methods, traditional open operative methods are used. Members of the section work as an integral part of the Digestive Disease sub-section. This sub-section provides a multi -disciplinary approach to the management of complex gastrointestinal problems with input from gastroenterologist, radiologist and pathologist, as well as the surgeons in this section of the Department of Surgery

Trauma and Surgical Critical Care

The Section of Trauma and Surgical Critical Care is responsible for administration of the In-house trauma ward. Trauma patients are managed with a multi-disciplinary approach allowing for rational integration of many different specialties involved in providing care for these seriously injured individuals.

The members of this section are primarily responsible for the initial management of all injury victims brought to the Hospital. This includes the initial resuscitation, diagnostic evaluation and all operative management not handled by specialists in other surgical disciplines.

Oncology

The Section of Surgical Oncology is responsible for providing care for GI, breast, soft tissue/ melanoma, and endocrine malignancies. State-of-the -art complex procedures such as pylorus-sparing, pancreatico - duodenectomy for pancreatic cancer, sphincter-sparing procedures, for low lying rectal cancers and minimally invasive diagnostic techniques are routinely performed.

Furthermore, innovative surgical procedures such as liver tumor injection therapy, sentinel node biopsy for melanoma and stereotactic breast biopsies are available. Cancer patients are managed with a multi-disciplinary approach for GI and Breast cancers through the multi-speciality resources available at the Hospital.

This provides an opportunity to discuss all the approaches, innovation and options available for treatment of these diseases. Most of this section's procedures are done on an outpatient basis viz. Breast and lymph node biopsy, venous access procedures and GI endoscopy.

The most common malignancies requiring in-patient care are: breast, colorectal, esophago-gastric, pancreatic, hepatobiliary, and soft tissue sarcomas. Additionally, members of the section are actively involved basic and translational research activities in collaboration with the laboratory scientists and staff mainly to evaluate tumor markers and detect metastases at very early stages.

Transplant Surgery

P. D. Hinduja Hospital serves as a major renal transplant center for the state of Maharashtra. Kidney transplants are routinely performed, and the Hospital is fully geared to begin liver transplants, pancreas transplants and small bowel transplants.

Dr. Anand Somaya

Dr. Anand Somaya finished schooling at Lawrence School, Lovedale and completed his undergraduate and post graduate medical studies at the prestigious Armed Forces Medical College in Pune. He then joined the army and spent two years in Ladakh treating multiple casualties of 1971 Indo Pak War. His operation theatre was at 17000 ft and was considered the highest in the world. The theatre was underground and extremely well equipped and all kinds of severe trauma cases from the battlefield were operated there before being sent down to the larger hospitals in Srinagar and Delhi.

Dr. Amresh Baliarsing, MCh, DNB is a consultant plastic surgeon working at the PD Hinduja Hospital, Bombay Hospital and Breach Candy Hospital.  He was Former Professor and Head, Department of Plastic Surgery, BYL Nair Charitable Hospital and Chairman, Board of Studies, Super Specialty Surgery and Member, Faculty of Medicine, Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, President, Indian Society of Reconstructive Microsurgery(2019) and President, Association of Plastic Surgeons of India(2018).
