Professional Experience

Dr. Paresh Pai has done his entire undergraduate and postgraduate training at the King Edward Memorial Hospital, Mumbai. He then worked as a Lecturer in Surgery at the B.Y. L. Nair Hospital and K.E.M. Hospital for three years. His interest in vascular surgery goes back to his days as a surgical trainee at the K.E.M. hospital where a thirteen year-old girl under his care, lost her acutely ischemic leg (that had developed secondary to an embolus from a diseased heart valve). He was further distressed by the lack of dedicated vascular surgical facilities during his three-year tenure as a Lecturer in Surgery at the B.Y.L. Nair Hospital and the K.E.M. Hospital. He therefore took it upon himself to secure training as a vascular surgeon with the intention of returning to Mumbai and filling this void. He has trained for three years as a vascular surgeon at various big centres in Australia (Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide). Dr. Pai in addition to being trained in all standard aspects of vascular surgery, has had the good fortune of being expertly trained in certain specialised areas like management of cerebrovascular disease, distal small vessel reconstruction in atherosclerotic and diabetic limbs, venous thromboembolic disease and endoluminal treatment of aortic aneurysms. He also had the opportunity for running the leg ulcer clinic at Westmead hospital which provided a vital service to patients with non-healing limb ulcers. This experience culminated in an appointment as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Westmead Hospital, Sydney (a tertiary, teaching hospital) with a conjoint position as a Lecturer in Surgery at the University of Sydney. He resigned this prestigious appointment after one year, in 1999 to return to Mumbai to set up a vascular surgical practice. He has been working as a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at leading Mumbai hospitals such as the Bombay Hospital, the Bhatia General Hospital, S.L. Raheja Hospital, Global Hospital, Breach Candy Hospital and Lilavati Hospital for the past twenty years. In the past twenty years in Mumbai, Dr. Pai has performed over a seven hundred and vascular bypass operations successfully for limb salvage, close to three hundred operations for cleaning of the carotid arteries for prevention of strokes, thousands of cases of varicose veins.
