Dr. Sudhir Pillai is a Full-Time Consultant in the Department of Cardiology at P. D. Hinduja National Hospital & Medical Research Centre, Mumbai. With more than two decades of medical experience, he stands at the forefront of Interventional Cardiology, with expertise in complex multi-vessel coronary interventions, heart failure management and cardiac device implantation. He is committed to delivering evidence-based, patient-centred cardiac care through advanced interventional techniques and personalised treatment plans.

Dr. Pillai completed his medical education at premier institutions including Seth G.S. Medical College & KEM Hospital, J.J. Hospital and Grant Medical College, Mumbai, followed by advanced fellowship training in Interventional Cardiology at Townsville Hospital and James Cook University, Queensland, Australia. Throughout his career, he has combined clinical excellence with research, medical education and a commitment to advancing cardiovascular care.

Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Pillai is an accomplished marathoner with a special interest in sports cardiology, providing tailored pre-participation cardiac screening for endurance athletes. His passion for preserving human life is mirrored by his dedication to environmental conservation through afforestation and marine biodiversity restoration. He is also an accomplished artist and author, with a solo exhibition at Mumbai's historic Jehangir Art Gallery and two published books reflecting his commitment to patient education and the human experience.

Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Pillai is an accomplished marathoner, having completed seven international full marathons and over 25 half marathons. His personal experience enables him to offer invaluable, empathetic insight into cardiac rehabilitation and sports performance, providing tailored pre-participation cardiac screening for endurance athletes through sports cardiology.

Mirroring his passion for preserving human life is his dedication to restoring the environment and exploring the human condition. Dr. Pillai has transformed a barren rocky plot in Raigad into a lush ecosystem by planting over 1,500 native trees using the Japanese Miyawaki afforestation method. He has also engineered a marine artificial coral reef off the coastline of Puducherry to stimulate marine biodiversity.

An accomplished artist and author, Dr. Pillai gives voice to questions that science cannot easily hold. His artwork was featured in a celebrated solo exhibition at Mumbai's historic Jehangir Art Gallery in February 2026. He is also the author of two compelling books—The Art of Consolation, a monograph exploring themes of presence, ambiguity and vulnerability, and What Your Doctor Wants You to Know, a public health resource designed to simplify medical complexities and foster stronger patient-physician partnerships.

Special Training

Dr. Sudhir Pillai completed his MBBS from Seth G.S. Medical College and KEM Hospital, Mumbai in 1994. He went on to earn his MD in Internal Medicine from Grant Medical College, Mumbai in 1997, followed by a DM in Cardiology and DNB in Cardiology in 2001. To further advance his expertise in interventional cardiology, he completed a Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Townsville Hospital and James Cook University, Queensland, Australia, in 2004–2005.

Professional Experience and Training

Dr. Pillai began his medical career as a Junior Resident in General Medicine at J.J. Group of Hospitals, Mumbai (1994–1995). He subsequently served as Junior Resident in Neurology (1995–1996), Senior Resident in Cardiology (1995–1996), Chief Resident in Internal Medicine (1996–1997), Lecturer in Internal Medicine (1997–1998), and Chief Resident in Cardiology (1998–2001) at the same institution.

Following his residency, he worked as a Staff Cardiologist at Madras Medical Mission, Chennai (2001–2004). He then completed a Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at Townsville Hospital, Queensland, Australia (2004–2005), before returning to Madras Medical Mission as a Consultant Cardiologist (2005–2006). Prior to joining P. D. Hinduja National Hospital & Medical Research Centre, Mumbai, he served as a Consultant Cardiologist at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital, Mumbai from 2009 to 2012. 

Honours & Awards

Dr. Sudhir Pillai has received numerous honours and awards throughout his distinguished medical career in recognition of his contributions to cardiology, clinical practice and academia. Among his academic honours, he secured First Rank in the Mumbai University MD (Internal Medicine) Examination and Third Rank in the Mumbai University DM (Cardiology) Examination, reflecting his exceptional academic performance during his medical training.
