Dr. Sanjay Agarwala

Submitted by admin on Tue, 09/07/2021 - 21:08

Dr. Sanjay Agarwala is the Head of Orthopaedics at the P. D. Hinduja National Hospital & Medical Research Centre. He is a gold medalist in MBBS as well as in MS (Orth) from the University of Bombay. He obtained his M.Ch in Orthopaedic surgery from the University of Liverpool, U.K., and was awarded the Norman Roberts Medal.

He has received several national & international fellowships and awards notably:

  • The International Graduate Fellowship Award of the Rotary Foundation USA.
  • Hand and Microsurgical Fellowship, Derby, UK
  • The Stanley Johnson Microsurgical Fellowship Award, Harrow, UK.
  • The Journal of Associations of Physicians of India (JAPI) awarded him the J.C. Patel – B.C. Mehta award.

Dr. Agarwala has conducted several teaching programmes to the Orthopedic faculty all over India. Under the chairmanship of Dr. Sanjay Agarwala there is a DNB training in Orthopedics recognized by the National Board where post graduate students in Orthopedics are trained at Hinduja Hospital.

He is the Chairman of the AO Foundation Western India Chapter for teaching of fracture management, and under his chairmanship Hinduja Hospital has been recognized as an AO centre of excellence, amongst the top-5 in the country.

His main areas of interest are joint replacement surgery, he is a pioneer in performing normal physiology joint replacements. Patients can resume activities like yoga and exercises after surgery with a close to normal and improved quality of life.

He also performs arthroscopic surgery of the knee, complex fracture fixation using the Swiss AO techniques, re-implantation and micro surgical work for limb salvage and restitution. Being conversant with the use of the surgical microscope Dr. Agarwala has initiated the programme offering Micro Lumbar Discectomy and Holmium Laser Discectomy for selected cases.

He has shown that auto transfusion and the use of Recombinant Human Erythropoetin reduces the need for blood transfusion in hip and knee surgeries. His dissertation for the M.Ch.Orth. examination, 1985, University of Liverpool on nerve conduits that can be used instead of nerve grafts, was awarded the Norman Roberts Medal at the examination. He has four original papers in the British Journal of Plastic Surgery.

His bench-mark research on Deep Vein Thrombosis in Arthroplasty surgery, is the first in India, has resulted in 5 major publications and has established the prevalence and incidence of this dreaded condition in orthopedic patients. With the parameters suggested, it is possible to cut down on the incidence and morbidity of this condition in Indian patients undergoing joint replacement.

The Journal of Orthopedics and Traumatology in 2000 has published an article on Box Osteotomy of the Tibia, as a “new technique” in the management of osteoarthritis of the knee, often an alternative to knee replacement for younger patients. His results with plating for the box osteotomy has been published in 2009 issue of the Journal of Orthopedics. He has successfully used Alendronate, a Bisphosphonate, to treat AVN of the hip for the last 10 years with great success. Alendronate which is most commonly used to treat osteoporosis, prevents bone resorption. This has been reported in the journal of Rheumatology 2005 issue, in the JBJS 2009, and more recently in the Journal of Arthroplasty, October 2011. Relief was seen within a few weeks and 80% became freely ambulant.

From clinical excellence, surgical skill and basic research, Dr. Sanjay Agarwala has successfully blended the best of the East and the West to bring world class surgical facilities for the benefit of Indian patients.
