Endocrinology
Endocrinology deals with diseases of the endocrine system, a system that controls the hormones. Doctors in the field of endocrinology deal with metabolism, or all the biochemical processes that make your bodywork, including how your body changes food into energy and how it grows and treat both adults as well as children.
Type 1 & 2 diabetes - Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, is usually diagnosed in children and young adults. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, but it also is preventable. Insulin resistance is when the body doesnt use insulin correctly. The bodys first reaction to this is for the pancreas to make more insulin to make up for it. However, over time the pancreas isnt able to keep up and cant make enough insulin to keep the blood sugar at normal levels, resulting in type 2 diabetes.
Thyroid Disorders - Hypothyroidism & Hyperthyroidism: The thyroid gland is located in the front of the neck and produces thyroid hormones that influence the body's metabolism and protein synthesis. In a patient suffering from Hypothyroidism, the thyroid gland cannot make enough thyroid hormone to keep the body running normally. In Hyperthyroidism the thyroid gland is overactive and makes excessive amounts of thyroid hormone and individuals may experience nervousness, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, hand tremors, excessive sweating, weight loss, and sleep problems, among other symptoms.
Osteoporosis - Osteoporosis is the deterioration of bone tissue and reduction of bone strength, making bones fragile. Osteoporosis makes the wrist, hip, spine and other parts of the skeleton vulnerable to fractures.
Other Hormonal Disorders covered include Obesity, Failure to Grow, Hirsutism (excessive facial and body hair in females) Menstrual Disorders and Metabolic Bone Disorders, Growth disorders (short stature), Excessive Facial and Body Hair, Metabolic Bone Disease, Disturbances in Calcium Metabolism, Certain Menstrual Disorders and Obesity, Secondary hypertension (Pheochromocytoma, Hyperaldosteronism), Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia (Men - tumor growth in more than one endocrine gland), Special emphasis is placed on management of pubertal and adolescent hormonal problems.
