I held the post of lecturer in General Surgery initially in a unit headed by Dr. S.K. Mathur, which had a special interest in hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery, especially in the management of portal hypertension. Since 17/01/1997, Dr. H.K. Shah who has a special interest in laparoscopic surgery headed the unit.
I had been given additional responsibility of lecturer looking after the Surgical Intensive Care Unit from March 1997.
EXPERIENCE IN THE UNITED KINGDOM
Honorary Sr. Clinical Fellow, Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham 01/06/98 - 30/11/98
Sr. Clinical Fellow, Royal Free Hospital, London, 01/12/98 - 30/11/00.
Besides being busy hepatobiliary-pancreatic units, these are two of the seven designated liver transplant centers within the United Kingdom. I have been trained to perform the retrieval procedure as well as all the steps of the recipient liver transplant procedure and have been involved in the pre-operative assessment and post-operative management of these patients. I have also assisted liver-small bowel and small bowel transplants, split liver transplants and living related liver transplant.
I have also performed a number of advanced hepatobiliary and pancreatic procedures including all types of major liver resections, pancreatic resections and repair of post cholecystectomy biliary strictures. I have been closely involved with the preoperative assessment and post-operative management of these patients.
CURRENT POSITION
Consultant GI Surgeon with special interest in Hepato-biliary-pancreatic surgery and Liver Transplantation, PD Hinduja National Hospital and Medical Research Centre, Mumbai. Jan 2001 to date
I continue to perform advanced hepato-biliary pancreatic procedures such as liver resections, biliary stricture repairs, pancreatic resections, necrosectomies, surgery for chronic pancreatitis and portal hypertension surgery in addition to GI procedures like surgeries for ulcerative colitis and bowel tuberculosis. I also perform laparoscopic surgeries like lap chole, lap liver resections and lap assisted bowel resections. I am the lead surgeon in the Liver Transplant program. The first successful liver transplant at Hinduja Hospital was carried out in October 2007. The surgical robot was introduced in 2018, and I have undertaken training in its use.
